Researcher based at Coventry University
I’m Geraldine Brown, a researcher based at Coventry University, with nearly two decades of experience in various social science research projects, particularly focusing on public policy issues, including the evaluation of prison-based rehabilitative programs. My first encounter with Theo Wiggan was in 2015 during a study I led, evaluating a personal development program aimed primarily at Black men serving sentences, conducted by a community-based organization.
During several weeks of engagement with the program participants, Theo made a lasting impression on me and my team. His dedication to the program, eagerness to learn, openness, and thoughtful reflection on his future upon release from prison were remarkable. I witnessed Theo’s leadership potential through his ability to learn, listen, reflect, and engage with his peers, prison staff, and program practitioners. These qualities indicated his potential to become a future leader and catalyst for change. Since his release, Theo has contributed valuable insights and support to a study I conducted for The Gambling Commission on ethnic minorities, crime, and gambling harms.
I am thrilled to see Theo’s vision come to fruition with the establishment of Skills Training and Recruitment Specialist CIC/Ltd (S.T.A.R.S), a testament to his strong work ethic and commitment to being part of the positive change he envisions. Theo’s leadership skills, lived experience, empathy, and determination will propel S.T.A.R.S to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the young people they engage with. He will serve as a role model, demonstrating that change is achievable with the right support, guidance, and belief.
